India Etiquette Lesson: Don't eat with the hand that wipes your butt
From: webword.com
"
I'm in Bangalore, India. Today I was eating lunch with my hands, since that is how most people eat here. I like to do what the natives do, when I can. Silverware is hardly used at all. Fine with me.
So, I grab some bread with both hands and tear it apart. You use bread to scoop up food and sauces. When I do this, one of my Indian colleagues looks over and says to me, "John, when I was a young child, it took me nearly two years to learn how to tear apart bread with just one hand, and then to use the bread to eat the food. It can be tricky."
I didn't think it was too hard to pull apart bread with one hand, but then I tried it and realized it isn't super easy. Then I thought about it some more and realized that my colleague was providing me with a subtle cue: Only use one hand to eat (your right hand). I looked around the table and all the people were only using their right hands to eat. Then I remembered that in this part of the world, the left hand is generally used for toiled related activities and it is considered poor etiquette to use it for eating activities.
Lesson learned. And, bravo to my colleague for deflecting the issue, while still giving me enough information to correct my behavior. If only user interfaces were so gentle, right?"
Are Web Sites Working for Older Users?
From: webword.com
"
Ergonomics Today -- "The study, conducted by Traci A. Hart of Wichita State University, looked at 36 websites that were intended to be accessed by people ages 60 and above to determine how senior-friendly the sites were in relationship to guidelines set out by the National Institute of Aging (NIA). The results indicate that even though seniors are often the audience sought, the websites themselves may not provide a very ergonomic fit in terms of ease of use for their visitors."
Who is surprised? The web is broken for older users, period.

Does Your Web Site Need Help?
From: webword.com
"
eContent Magazine -- "I've used these products and they are slick. I will be even happier when they provide better support for XML, including graphic (SVG) and multimedia (SMIL) standards. Still, if your Web reports suggest visitor confusion, a technical writer with usability and Help development skills may be the all the Help you need."
People don't think much about the usability of content. That's unfortunate because many usability professionals are outstanding content developers. This is an area ripe for exploration.

Not everyone is worth supporting
From: webword.com
"
Gerry McGovern -- "Support costs money. Some customers are worth supporting because they are, or have the capacity to be, profitable. Some customers are not worth supporting because the cost of supporting them is greater than the profit that can be made from them. Differentiating between profitable and unprofitable customers is a critical skill."
